Almost 30,000 Children Died Today

October 9, 2008

It wasn't the result of a tsunami or a hurricane.  It was the result of poverty, hunger, and easily preventable diseases.  Unlike Hurricane Katrina or an Asian Tsunami, these killers will result in another 30,000 deaths tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day.  As conservative Evangelical Christians in America how can we call ourselves pro life and turn a blind eye to this.  We are concerned about the 40 million children killed by abortion in America, why aren't we equally outraged about the 60 million children worldwide that died between 2000 and 2006 as a result of hunger or preventable disease.

We should continue to fight for the cause of the unborn.  Sadly, right now we are very limited in what we can do to stop abortion on demand.  However, there is nothing to prevent the church from rising up and ending senseless deaths all over the world.  I have repented even today of complacency, and a concern for my own material wants while thousands slip into eternity.  How many of the 30,000 children that die today will spend eternity separated from the Lord?  How many of our brothers and sister in Christ are even now crying out to God for the scraps that fall from our table?  As we ponder how God has been gracious and merciful to us, let us ask the Lord how we can extend grace and mercy to others.  Grace is our motivation.
