First Ministry Update - Summer 09

July 24, 2009

Today we went to Vila Nova to help host a group that was visiting from the state of Rio.  We were in the community center in Vila Nova and I could not help but think about the past few years.  Less than 4 years ago we were meeting once a month in that same community center for worship and meeting the rest of the time in a tiny one room chapel that we could squeeze about 20 people into.  Now this church is thriving.  They have over 60 members; very good in a city that is only 0.3% evangelical.  Thanks to a church in another part of Brazil they have their own property with 3 buildings.  The sanctuary is currently being renovated and a baptismal added, which will be used for the first time on Aug 9th.

The church is feeding dozens of children every Sunday and reaching over 50 families with the feeding ministry.  They are providing medicine and meeting other needs for several widows in the community.  They are also, providing warm clothing and school supplies.  Currently, Living Bread Ministries is only funding the food kit ministry, all of the other needs are being met by the tithes and offering of the people.  This is exciting considering so many of the members live in abject poverty.

Like thousands of others in Vila Safira these women need
the hope found only in Jesus Christ.

Tomorrow we will be working at our new church plant in Vila Safira.  This is considered to be one of the most dangerous neighborhood in greater Porto Alegre.  We have been working there since March and have already seen a great response.  Tomorrow Pastor Magioli and I will be spending the afternoon and evening with Pastor Jocelito.  We will be attending the weekly Bible study and afterward we will be preparing and serving soup.  This will be my first chance to meet the members and those attending the church.  Pray that all goes well and for safety and health.

We still need to raise $600 per month to fund this church plant.  Currently, it is being funded by money we set aside last year but that is running out quickly.  If you would like to help fund the church plant in Vila Safira please
