Second Ministry Update - Summer 09

July 27, 2009

We had a very good weekend here in southern Brazil.  On Saturday we were able to visit the new church plant in Vila Safira.  We began this church in March and the Lord has been blessing.  We recently began a soup ministry at the church.  On Saturday's Pastor Jocelito is leading a Bible study and afterward they are feeding those who attend.  Barbara and I joined them this past Saturday and were truly blessed.  After Pastor Jocelito spoke I shared a little on Romans 5:6-8.  After a time of worship it was time to eat.

Pastor Jocelito and his wife Luciane had prepared 45 liters of soup.  I was humbled and heartbroken to see people with various containers lining up to eat.  I especially remember one elderly woman who had a plastic container about a 1/2 gallon in size.  Pastor Jocelito filled it with hot soup and she began to eat exactly how you might imagine someone who hasn't eaten in days would.  It was heartbreaking on this very cold winter night to see men, women, and children, eating in this way.  At the same time it was a blessing to see the Lord working and to know that because of this little church their needs were being met, at least for that moment.

I also, learned of an additional ministry I was previously unaware of.  One of the church members is using the same equipment we bought for the soup to bake loaves of fresh bread to feed the people at the Sunday morning worship services.  What a blessing to know that every Sunday as they are filled with physical bread they will also hear the message of the Living Bread that came down from heaven.  It is a glorious thing to see the church ministering to it's community.

The swine flu is spreading here.  There are about 10,000 cases in the state we are in resulting in over 500 deaths.  It is believed that several children in Vila Safira have contracted it, as well.  Please pray for them, their bodies are already weakened by the constant cold and hunger.

Yesterday I taught Sunday school and preached in Vila Nova.  It was a blessing to share God's word with our brothers and sisters there.  We have several meetings this week and will also be serving with our church plants in Vila Cefer and Bom Jesus.  Please pray for wisdom and God's blessing and provision for the work.
